How to become wiser each day

The book

After reading this post, we’ll see:

  • What is “ the book”.

  • How you can use this idea to become wiser each day.

TL; DR;

Write each major life lesson in one place. Revisit often.

Life is the best teacher. At each turn, it gives us a lesson. Everyone we meet, we can learn from. Then there are moments which resonate:

  • The quote which opened your mind.

  • The behaviour you swear never to repeat.

  • An important realization after a decade of work.

These lessons shape our identity. They teach us how to conduct overselves. They become a set of unwritten rules, somewhere in our mind.

How to make this wisdom concrete?

During each moment of learning, take time to reflect.

  • What did this experience teach me?

  • How do I prevent this mistake next time?

  • How will I fix my weakness which revealed itself?

Most importantly, write it down in one place. I call this “the book” - the one place containing your life’s lessons & realizations.

Over time, it becomes the code for your life.

How to get started?

1. Choose your medium.

I use a google doc in my drive. You can use a notebook just as well. The medium doesn’t matter. What matters is the system.

2. When you learn a life lesson, stop.

Action without reflection = you keep going around in circles. A great way to reflect regularly = journaling. It’s the simplest 5 minutes you can spend daily which will give you massive returns over time.

3. Write it down.

Only 1 rule here - the lesson should be short enough, not paragraphs long. Your supporting details can be long, but ensure the lesson is short. This way you'll remember it easily.

4. Revisit.

Create slots in your calendar to revisit these lessons. Half - yearly or end of the year is ok. This way, the lesson is concrete in your mind.

Life is too short to make the same mistake twice.

The beauty of this exercise

it forces you to slow down. It makes you reflect and learn. Most importantly - it makes you wiser each day.

I got this idea from Tim Ferris' podcast with Greg McKeown (author of the book "essentialism."). Greg spoke about Rob Dyrdek's (American Entrepreneur) meticulous system for life planning.

He maintains a 50 - page document called the "Rhythm of experience".

That’s it!!

I hope this concept helps you become wiser each day . If you found this helpful, share with someone who will benefit.
