A simple way to improve any area of your life

The wheel of life

After reading this article, you’ll learn:

  1. What is the wheel of life?

  2. How to use this tool?

Life is a journey. Sometimes the journey is smooth and sometimes it is bumpy. While we cannot control external factors, there are many things in our control.

But when life is busy and filled with distractions, it becomes difficult to understand how we feel & how satisfied we are.

A sick man wants only 1 thing = health.

A poor man wants only 1 thing = money.

A hungry man wants only 1 thing = food.

Beyond the basic needs, a few more things make up a “balanced life”.

But, what are they, and how do I know how I’m doing?

The wheel of life solves this problem. It provides a visual way to look at what is important to us. From here, we can make changes.

The wheel of life is a tool which helps in:

  • Understanding what is important for me.

  • See which area of my life needs attention.

After all, a wheel needs to be circular. Otherwise the journey will be bumpy.

In the above example, you’re a rockstar at work and have a lot of money.

BUT

Your health sucks.

You have no friends.

You hate where you live.

You can’t make time for hobbies.

Obviously, many things need to change.

Why should I know about this?

  1. To assess your situation.

Sometimes you may feel that things aren’t going well. If you don’t stop to understand what that is, 10 years later you’ll end up wondering where time went. The wheel of life is a great tool to make us think what’s really important in life right now.

  2. To change what isn’t working.

In school, when you get a bad grade, you know you should study harder.

At work when you get a poor rating, you know you should work harder.

And when you look at your wheel of life, you know what you have to change.

    1. To lead a purposeful & balanced lifestyle.

      The pursuit of happiness.

How do I use this tool?

Because you’re awesome, I have created a free template for you to use 🙂

  1. Set aside 30 minutes.

  2. List what is important in your life today.

  3. Start rating each item. 1 = sucks. 10 = great.

Now what?

Once you’ve created your wheel, consider these to achieve balance:

  1. Set goals.

SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time - Bound.

e.g. I want to lose 3 Kg in the next 6 months.

  2. Create systems.

Atomic habits by James Clear is a great book on how to do this.

You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.

James Clear
  1. Create a schedule and make time to implement your lifestyle changes.

  2. Take action. Be consistent.

Don’t break the chain. Consistency pays in the long - run.

You can modify the wheel to look at different areas of your life as well:

  • Work wheel.

  • Health wheel.

  • etc.

Hope this helps in your journey. And if so, share the article with your friends and family.
