The secret to a fulfilling life

Ikigai

Have you ever felt lost in your life or career?

Have you questioned the deeper meaning of existence?

If so, you're not alone.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is easy to lose sight of what really matters.

Enter Ikigai - A Japanese concept that means "the reason for being".

Francesc Miralles and Héctor Garcia wrote the book Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life. This helped push ikigai into the global spotlight.

• "Iki," meaning "alive" or "life"

• "Gai," meaning "benefit" or "worth"

Ikigai represents the convergence of:

  • What you love

  • What you are good at

  • What the world needs

  • What you can be paid for

Everyone says "follow your passion". This is terrible advice. You should not follow your passion. You should follow your Ikigai.

That's because, this beautiful concept balances your:

  • Mission

  • Calling

  • Expertise

  • Passion

Into a harmonious coexistence.

"The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well."

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ok, but why should you know about this?

Applying Ikigai to your life is like unlocking a treasure chest of fulfilment.

  1. A Fulfilling life.

We're not made to sit in a cubicle for 8 hours, push buttons and get married to screens. The world is beautiful. There are experiences waiting for us & nostalgic moments to create. Wouldn't you rather do something where you lose track of time?

  2. Most people think they'll live forever. They ruin their time & health during their youth. Then they chase power to show off to others.

    "I'll travel the world, someday"

"When I'm rich, I'll follow my passion"

Why not make the someday today?

  3. Major life decisions.

When choosing a career path, we only look at "what's hot in the market". Instead of optimizing learning, we optimize for earning. When you devote your life only for the pursuit of power and money, such things are common:

TC = total compensation (Salary) !

How to Find Your Ikigai

  1. Self-Reflection. Ask yourself what you love to do, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. In the intersection of these four elements lies your Ikigai.

  2. Experiment. Try new things, step outside your comfort zone, and embrace lifelong learning. Your Ikigai might be hiding in the most unexpected places.

  3. Focus on the Little Things. Remember, Ikigai isn't about grand gestures; it's about finding joy in everyday moments. Take a walk in nature. Savor a delicious meal. Connect with loved ones – All these are expressions of your Ikigai.

  4. Be Patient: Finding your Ikigai is a journey, not a destination. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't happen overnight. Keep exploring, keep learning, and keep living life to the fullest.
