How to improve your life ( by subtraction)

Via Negativa

After reading this post, we’ll see:

  • What is Via Negativa.

  • How you can use it in your personal & professional life.

TL; DR;

For personal development, our natural tendency is to add something to life. Instead, try deleting things.

I experiment a lot. When I want to improve something in life, I always research new ideas to add to my schedule.

  • The next productivity technique.

  • Decision - making frameworks.

  • A time management method.

Why? Because adding things to our schedule is a default.

Over time, it led to frustration:

  • No real progress.

  • Feeling overwhelmed.

  • Spinning in the same place.

One day I came across a powerful approach. And I was hooked.

Instead of adding, why not try deleting things from your life?

This is called Via Negativa, a Latin phrase which means “negative way”. The core idea is that often, we get better results from removal, rather than addition. It’s an ancient idea popularized and revived in the modern age.

"I don’t believe I have the ability to say what is going to work. Rather, I try to eliminate what’s not going to work. I think being successful is just about not making mistakes. It’s not about having correct judgment. It’s about avoiding incorrect judgments."

- The Almanack of Naval Ravikant

How to use this idea in your personal & professional life

To get started, I’ve created an infographic in 4 main areas of life. If you takeaway 1 thing from it, it should be the mindset of asking this question:

“In my scenario, how can I improve my life by getting rid of things”?

That’s it!!

I hope this concept helps you improve your life by subtraction . If you found this helpful, share with someone who will benefit.
