How to build good habits?

The habit pipeline

After reading this post, we’ll see:

  • What is the habit pipeline.

  • Why you should know about it.

  • How you can use the habit pipeline to build awesome habits.

TL; DR:

Create a Kanban board to track habits you’re thinking about, learning & implementing. This way you’ll build good habits in a mindful way.

Do you feel like you're drowning in information? Your phone buzzes 50 times a day. You're always online. You spend a few hours watching TV everyday. You consume breaking news and productivity hacks and feel like you're learning something. But in the back of your mind, you KNOW you're in the same place, spinning your wheels.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Per studies, in your leisure time alone, you consume 34 Gb or 100,000 words / day. Another shocking fact:

  • In 2011, Americans consumed 5 times as much information daily as they did in 1986.

Just imagine - what this number may be today.

The problem:

  • Non - stop distraction.

  • Information overload.

  • The illusion of knowledge.

In short, your brain is fried. We risk turning into robots - consuming information the whole day. But not learning anything. Not improving. Not growing.

What if I told you I have a simple system which helps:

  • Be intentional about learning.

  • Be mindful about habits.

  • See your progress.

Enter the Habit pipeline - your weapon to build good habits. It is a Kanban board (project management tool to help visualize progress) for your habits.

How to use it?

My habit pipeline is in Notion (It's a free tool and gives you building blocks to create anything you want . Like a Kanban board). If you don't want to use notion, no problem. A pen and paper will do just fine.

My system has 4 sections:

  • Thinking about it

  • Reading about it

  • Building a system

  • Implemented

My habit pipeline

  1. The next time you come across something interesting, and if it makes you think, STOP. Enter it in the "Thinking about it" section and continue your work.

Tomorrow, assume your friend tells you about something cool. You think this will make a difference in your life, once more, STOP. Enter it in the same section.

You now have a place you can see cool ideas and habits which caught your eye. Much better than mindless consumption, don’t you think?

  2. Next, whenever you get some spare time, research about the idea / topic / habit list you have listed. You can now move them to the "Reading about it" section.

You don’t have to move all ideas to this section - just the ones which you’re truly interested in. Think of this as a filtering system.

  3. Once you're confident you know enough to add this idea or habit to your life, move it to "Building a system". The system may as simple as :

"Every weekday at 5 PM I'll workout in my local gym".

For more ideas check out my [implementation intention post]

  4. Finally, once the habit is a part of your routine, you can move it to "implemented" section.

To help continue a good habit, check out my [Don’t break the chain] post.

Over the next few months and years, you can see how you've built up your habits. You can decide which ones you want to add or remove from your life.
