A life hack to be always lucky

The 4 types of luck

In 1,000 parallel universes, you want to be wealthy in 999 of them. You don’t want to be wealthy in the fifty of them where you got lucky, so we want to factor luck out of it.

After reading this post, we’ll see:

  • What are the 4 types of luck.

  • How you can create your own luck.

TL; DR;

You can create your own luck! By motion, awareness and uniqueness.

When I thought of the word “luck”, usually these things came to mind:

  • Winning a lottery.

  • Being born in a rich family.

  • Inherit money from a distant relative.

But then I came across a concept of “4 types of luck”. More importantly, this part stood out:

You can actually create your own luck!

I was hooked and explored more.

In 1978, an American neurologist & author James H Austin published this book:

In it he explained the 4 types of luck:

Blind Luck.

Chance I is completely impersonal; you can’t influence it."

- Dr. James H. Austin

This is what I wrote about earlier. e.g. winning a lottery. The events are not at all in your control. The best you can do if you’re lucky this way is to use the resources wisely. e.g. if you win a large sum of money, invest in yourself (or in startups).

Luck from motion.

Luck from motion favors those who have a persistent curiosity about many things coupled with an energetic willingness to experiment and explore.

- Dr. James H. Austin

Here, you’re not waiting for things to happen. You’re going out there and making them happen. You’re actively outside your comfort zone. You’re trying new things all the time. You’re not sticking to the default.

Luck from awareness.

Luck presents only a faint clue, the potential opportunity exists, but it will be overlooked except by that one person uniquely equipped to observe it, visualize it conceptually, and fully grasp its significance.

- Dr. James H. Austin

Here you have an understanding of a trend just when it’s breaking out. This understanding may be because of your unique knowledge of a market or because you connected the dots. e.g. when the AI boom was breaking, you predicted the need for high - compute chips and invested in NVDIA.

Luck from uniqueness.

Luck unique to you comes to you, unsought, because of who you are and how you behave.

- Dr. James H. Austin

This type of luck comes to you. Because of your unique skillsets, reputation and who you are. There’s no shortcut here. According to me, a good way to do this is to stay curious and do what you love, for a long time (think decades).
